Shaping planetary health together

With our monthly webinar series ‘Planetary Health Dialogues’ we bring together German and international scientists, policy-makers, health sector representatives and civil society actors. With the Dialogues we aim to jointly develop ideas for a paradigm shift towards equity, health and well-being within planetary boundaries.

The Dialogues’ topics range from resilience in the German healthcare sector to health promotion and health justice in the Anthropocene, and the role of health in international agreements on climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. With our Dialogues, we immerse ourselves in the scientific and political debates on these topics and discuss implications for policy and practice.

Planetary Health in a period of geopolitical upheaval

In our April edition, we hosted the first hybrid Planetary Health Dialogue, exploring the connections between planetary health and security policy. Against the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical conflicts, the discussion with Dr. Marion Schulte zu Berge (German Advisory Council on Global Change), Dr. Benjamin Pohl (adelphi), Sima Bulut (German Council on Foreign Relations), and Amanda Low & Max D. López Toledano (National University of Singapore) highlighted how climate change and environmental degradation act as drivers of global instability and why these planetary crises must be more systematically integrated into foreign and security policy

Environmental Justice: Air pollution as a key driver of health inequalities — What can Berlin learn from London?

In our October edition, we focused on environmental justice, highlighting how people with lower incomes are more affected by air pollution. Together with Shirley Rodrigues (former Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy, London) and Prof. Dr. habil. Heike Köckler (Bochum University of Applied Sciences) we explored how London has significantly improved its air quality and what lessons German cities can learn from this experience of how to better protect communities disproportionately affected by air pollution.

The Health Risks of Pollution: Finding Solutions

The webinar focused on EU laws, regulations and monitoring to tackle the pollution crisis. As this legislative term of the European Parliament is coming to an end, we looked at which specific legislative procedures have been initiated and implemented in the last five years to solve chemical pollution. Additionally, the webinar gave an outlook on outstanding needs for further political action and enforcement in the upcoming legislative term.

The Need for Transformation to Post-Growth EU Health Systems

At the fourth edition of our Planetary Health Dialogues in May 2023, we addressed the question of how healthcare systems in the EU must be designed in the future to meet the needs of people and the planet.

The event was the opening of the Centre for Planetary Health Policy’s (CPHP) new webinar series.
