Development of cornerstones of a sustainability strategy for the German healthcare system
Increasing pressures from environmental degradation and climate change also pose major challenges for the German healthcare system: on the one hand, it has to cope with increasing climate-related health risks and, on the other hand, it needs to contribute to environmental, resource and climate protection through more sustainable practices and the gradual achievement of the legally enshrined climate neutrality target for 2045. However, this impending transformation also presents an opportunity to initiate fundamental changes that benefit patients, primarily by strengthening prevention and health promotion in order to reduce illness and resource consumption.
The German healthcare system is therefore faced with the urgent task of embedding ecological, economic and social sustainability more firmly in care, prevention, health promotion and rehabilitation. This should not only improve health and care, but also reduce climate and environmental impacts, conserve resources and strengthen climate resilience.
On behalf of and in cooperation with the BKK Dachverband, CPHP is working closely with international and national stakeholders to develop cornerstones for the development of a sustainability strategy for the German healthcare system.
Project goals
The aim is to develop viable cornerstones for a sustainability strategy in the German healthcare system in close cooperation with key stakeholders.
Methodology
The project methodology combines analysis, dialogue and conceptual development.
At the start of the project, existing initiatives and approaches in the field of sustainability in healthcare will be examined, and concepts and starting points in legislation and approaches from the healthcare sector will be reviewed. Based on this, key areas will be identified and cornerstones for a sustainability strategy developed.
In the course of three workshop discussions, these cornerstones will be reflected upon and discussed with various national and international stakeholders.
In this way, the project combines international experience with national requirements and contributes to the development of viable and practical strategies for greater sustainability in healthcare.
