Climate Change and Health: Status Report & Expert Discussions
As part of the project “KlimGesundAkt”, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI)’s 2010 status report “Climate Change and Health” was comprehensively revised. In the new report, written by an interdisciplinary team of around 90 authors, the currently available evidence on the impacts of climate change on human health in Germany was synthesised, and corresponding recommendations for action were developed. The report was published in three issues of the Journal of Health Monitoring.
The compiled evidence highlights the urgent need for comprehensive transformation, particularly in urban areas, to address climate change and its health impacts.
Project Objectives
On behalf of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the Centre for Planetary Health Policy (CPHP) supported the communication of the findings from the RKI’s status report “Climate Change and Health.” The aim was to discuss the report’s implications as well as good practice examples for mitigation and adaptation activities at the municipal level.
Methodology
In September 2023, CPHP, together with the Climate Change and Health Coordination Office at the Robert Koch Institute and the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA), organised three virtual expert discussions:
1st Expert Discussion on 14 September 2023:
- Heat, UV radiation, and extreme weather events
2nd Expert Discussion on 19 September 2023:
- Air pollution, allergens, and mental health
3rd Expert Discussion on 28 September 2023:
- (Vector-)borne diseases
These sessions served as a platform to exchange experiences and discuss examples of good practice for designing climate-healthy municipalities. The events targeted decision-makers and representatives from local administrations.
