Planetary Health Dialogue: “Assessing governance for climate change and health: An exploratory approach”
With the next edition of our webinar series “Planetary Health Dialogues” on Monday, 30st September 2024, 4.00 — 5.00 pm CEST we would like to focus on climate change and health governance.
The global impact of the climate crisis has reached unprecedented levels – especially with regard to our health. Thus, it is crucial to accelerate actions across all sectors focussing on social and environmental determinants of health and the underlying causes of the climate crisis. Clear and strong political governance in the area of climate change and (public) health is an essential basis for the development of climate-resilient health systems and societies. As the climate crises progresses, it is important to develop appropriate tools for evidence-informed decision-making to help identify strengths and weaknesses in the respective systems.
The PHONIC (Public Health OperatioNs for clImate aCtion)-project, a cooperation between the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, the Helmholtz Zentrum Munich, the Planetary Health Eastern Africa Hub and the CPHP, aims to develop a practical guidance for identifying priority public health operations for climate action. The focus of the project is on the development and piloting of indicators assessing climate change and (public) health governance structures in Germany and Kenya.
This webinar will provide an overview of the latest findings and conclusions from the PHONIC project. In particular, the challenges and obstacles to making governance structures assessable and tangible will be highlighted.
Together with Dr. Karin Geffert, Chair for Public Health and Health Services Research Institute for Medical Information Processing, Biometry and Epidemiology (IBE) & Pettenkofer School of Public Health, Melvine Otieno,Planetary Health Eastern African Hub, and Annkathrin von der Haar, CPHP, we will discuss the following questions:
- How can governance structures for health and climate change be assessed in terms of their strengths and weaknesses?
- What lessons can be learned from applying an international framework to different local contexts?
The event will take place via Zoom. The dial-in details will then be sent to you automatically by e‑mail. The event will be recorded, and the video will be made available afterwards.
