Dr. Bri­git­te Knopf

Foun­der and Direc­tor | Zukunft Kli­ma­So­zi­al | Insti­tu­te for Cli­ma­te Social Poli­cy

Dr. Bri­git­te Knopf is the foun­der and direc­tor of Zukunft Kli­ma­So­zi­al, a sci­en­ti­fic think tank dedi­ca­ted to sha­ping a cli­ma­te-neu­tral and soci­al­ly just future. Until Sep­tem­ber 2025, she was also a mem­ber and depu­ty chair of the Ger­man government’s Expert Coun­cil on Cli­ma­te Issues for five years. From 2015 to the end of 2023, she was Secre­ta­ry Gene­ral at the Mer­ca­tor Rese­arch Insti­tu­te on Glo­bal Com­mons and Cli­ma­te Chan­ge (MCC), whe­re she also initia­ted and hea­ded the Poli­cy Unit. Until the end of 2014, she was depu­ty head of the “Sus­tainable Solu­ti­on Stra­te­gies” depart­ment at the Pots­dam Insti­tu­te for Cli­ma­te Impact Rese­arch (PIK). 

Bri­git­te Knopf holds a doc­to­ra­te in phy­sics and has been working in an inter­di­sci­pli­na­ry con­text for many years. She con­ducts rese­arch on cli­ma­te eco­no­mics and ener­gy poli­cy issues in the Ger­man and Euro­pean con­text, with a focus on the soci­al­ly just design of the trans­for­ma­ti­on.
