Founder and Director | Zukunft KlimaSozial | Institute for Climate Social Policy
Dr. Brigitte Knopf is the founder and director of Zukunft KlimaSozial, a scientific think tank dedicated to shaping a climate-neutral and socially just future. Until September 2025, she was also a member and deputy chair of the German government’s Expert Council on Climate Issues for five years. From 2015 to the end of 2023, she was Secretary General at the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC), where she also initiated and headed the Policy Unit. Until the end of 2014, she was deputy head of the “Sustainable Solution Strategies” department at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).
Brigitte Knopf holds a doctorate in physics and has been working in an interdisciplinary context for many years. She conducts research on climate economics and energy policy issues in the German and European context, with a focus on the socially just design of the transformation.
