Dr. Wolfgang Straff studied medicine at RWTH Aachen University, where he also earned his doctorate in environmental medicine with a focus on human biomonitoring. After working as a resident in the Department of Dermatology and Allergology at Aachen University Hospital, where he conducted research on cytokine secretion by activated T‑lymphocytes, he joined the Federal Environment Agency in 2003. Since 2008, he has been head of the “Environmental Medicine and Health Assessment” division and deputy head of the “Environmental Hygiene” department.
His main areas of work and research interests include the identification of susceptible population groups, human biomonitoring in environmental medicine, environmental hygiene, the health effects of fragrances, environmental allergies, the effects of particulate matter, and issues of risk communication. He also deals with planetary health and the effects of climate change on health.
